The Griffins Win

Almost Winners

Ralph Heaton (1857–?)

Entry 76
Birmingham, England

Educated privately and abroad, in 1875 Heaton was articled to Birmingham architect Thomson Plevins. Heaton began his own practice in 1881, and went into a ten-year partnership with AE Dempster in 1884. He designed shops and churches, warehouses, banks and homes. He was a member of the Birmingham Architectural Association.

Heaton’s plan is a consistent study in concentric circles and radiating streets. Parliament is at the centre of this massive cobweb. Four main boulevards lead to the cardinal points of the compass. It is a very impractical design.
