Arthur Samuel H McClay

Entry 59
Menzies, Western Australia

In 1901 McClay was a mine manager in Menzies. He had studied architecture at the Brisbane Central Technical College, and probably practised architecture in Queensland. In 1887 and 1891 he exhibited some of his architectural drawings at the Queensland National Association. When he moved to Western Australia is not known, and it was not until 1924 that he registered as an architect at Midland Junction in that state.

In McClay’s plan, the city is encompassed by an irregular circle labelled ‘Ring Road’. The most compelling feature is a complex of major buildings grouped near the centre. It combines grid and radial systems.
