John A Moffat (1871–1941)
Entry 27
Johannesburg, South Africa
Born in Manchester, England, Moffat migrated with his family, first
to New Zealand and later to Australia. He studied and was articled in
Brisbane,
then worked for his builder father. He moved to South Africa in about
1895, and became a partner in the Johannesburg practice of MacIntosh
& Moffat, later Moffat & Harvey. He designed many Johannesburg
buildings, and planned the East Pretoria suburb of Waverley in 1904.
Moffat was
a member
of Johannesburg City Council for three years in the 1920s. In 1939 he
retired to his farm in the Transvaal.
Nearly every element in Moffat’s plan is located south of the river.
A major focus is a City Hall set in Yarralumla. He has houses of parliament
on Kurrajong Hill. There is a lake at the eastern end of the city with
an artificial island in the shape of Australia.
